Winterreise Limited edition

"Perhaps one element of a true masterpiece is that it invites itself to be experienced in a new light," says Joyce DiDonato. Inspired to take this repertoire on a recital tour by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, she takes an innovative approach to Schubert's great song cycle Winterreise - winter journey.

While DiDonato is not the first woman to take on the challenge of Winterreise, traditionally the preserve of tenors and baritones, she brings her own dramaturgy to its 24 songs.

Setting poems by Wilhelm Müller, Winterreise is seen through the eyes of a heartbroken young man making his way through a frozen landscape. "But what about her?" asks DiDonato. "The woman he loved and who, for whatever reason, disappointed him ... What if the young man of Winterreise sent her his last journals before he parted? What if his final words arrived to her as a kind of suicide note? ... And what if she reads the writings? Word for word. Over and over ... This can also be her journey."
