Bruch: Double Concertos, Adagio Appassionato & Loreley Overture
Orf Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra
Concerto for 2 Pianos / Concerto for Clarinet & Viola / Loreley Ouverture / Adagio Appassianato by Oliver Schnyder / Julia Kociuban / ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra WIen / Howard Griffiths
Bruch wrote the two double concertos at the end of his musical career, when he had already declared that "the source of his inspiration had dried up." But the clarinet playing of his son Max Felix inspired him to the original double concerto for clarinet, viola and orchestra op. 88. The wonderful and still neglected double concerto offers both soloists a variety of possibilities for musical development. Also a late work: the Concerto for two pianos that the composer originally composed in 1912 for an American piano duo, but was performed by him only in a comprehensive editing. It was not until 1976 that the original version was released. Bruch's pianistic, powerful late-night version reflects echoes of Bach and Brahms, making it, like the other works recorded here, a veritable discovery for all lovers of late-Romantic orchestral music.
