It was not surprising for the audience of the baroque opera, when female roles were sung by men or women dressed themselves as men on the stage. This joyful game of switching the gender roles in the baroque opera is the focus of the first collaboration of Lautten Compagney, Vivica Genaux (mezzosopran) and Lawrence Zazzo (countertenor). "Baroque Gender Stories" features arias, duets and instrumental works from operas by Georg Friedrich Händel (1685 - 1759), Johann Adolf Hasse (1699 - 1783), Baldassare Galuppi (1706 -1785), Tommaso Traetta (1727 - 1779), Antonio Vivaldi (1678 - 1741) and Georg Christoph Wagenseil (1715 - 1777). From one aria to the next, Vivica Genaux and Lawrence Zazzo play a game of shifting identities that involves switching the gender roles: in some cases she is the primo uomo and he is the prima donna, at other times their roles are reversed.
