Born in Philadelphia on July 10, 1938, Lee Morgan's

career lasted from the mid-1950s to the early

1970s. Originally interested in the vibraphone, he

eventually showed a growing enthusiasm for the

trumpet. His primary stylistic influence was Clifford

Brown, who gave the teenager a few lessons before

his untimely death in a car accident. Morgan joined

the Dizzy Gillespie big band at 18, and remained a

member for a year and a half, until the group was

forced to disband in 1958. He began his recording

career as a leader in 1956 for the Blue Note label. He

would record a total of 25 albums for the company.

Morgan joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1958,

where he further developed his talents as a soloist

and composer. Blakey is heard along with Morgan

in Expoobident, presented here, which features a

strong hard bop quintet that also includes Eddie

Higgins on piano, Art Davis on bass, and Clifford

Jordan on tenor saxophone. Morgan's death was

tragic. On the evening of February 19, 1972, he was

shot by his girlfriend following an argument between

sets at Slug's, a popular New York City jazz club. He

was only 33.
