Mermaid, muppet, octogenarian, street urchin - just who or what is Shiloh? And for that matter, who is Betty?Twenty four years ago, having just buried her parents, Betty felt something, someone, brushing at the edge of her senses. Betty, her husband Frank, and their daughter Chiara negotiate Betty's deterioration (some might call it liberation), as her behaviour grows increasingly erratic due to apparent dementia. The eccentric workings of Betty's mind as she is befriended and guided by her shape-shifting imaginary companion Shiloh, take everyone on a roller coaster ride through both the real and the surreal. As Betty becomes increasingly enveloped in the cocoon of her decline, she unwittingly manages to unravel that very cocoon with Shiloh's assistance. As a result, the secrets and lies from Betty's and Frank's pasts emerge as the story unfolds, and it is increasingly clear that nothing is quite as it first seems. A family/psychological drama, peppered with occasional humour, some surprising action, unexpected secrets, and the odd tear shedding, set against a backdrop of Lilongwe and Johannesburg, with cameo settings in Los Angeles and Assisi. If Still Alice and Elizabeth Is Missing are novels you enjoyed, Shiloh On My Mind is definitely for you.
