Thirty minutes into the dinner preparations, Scheley emerges from the guest room, "Where the hell is everybody? Any beer left?"His nose hones in on the food, so he follows the trail into the kitchen. "Little girl! Hey you?" He yells at Lloyd rudely. "Go get me a beer and what time is dinner! It's smelling good as hell in here! Miss Heppner, you are the man! Can you come cook and clean for me?"Lloyd glares at the man, indignantly. One of those she thought. An arrogant, rude white man who gets worse the more he drinks. She's seen it in movies a lot. Miss Heppner, used to this type of talk, is afraid nonetheless."What're you waiting for? Get me a beer! I'm the guest. You need to be more hospitable! I think it's some beers out by the pool." Scheley bellows at the child. Lloyd stopsd stirring the macaroni and Cheese and stands her ground; her hands on her hips and head cocked to the left. "What's wrong with your legs? They brought you into the kitchen, surely you can go get your own beer. I'm not your servant. Neither is Miss Heppner."That is the last thing Scheley expected, considering the caliber of the people caring for the girl. She could use some of their classiness. "You're a rude, disobedient kid. I don't know how Novack deal with the likes of you and a hundred others on a daily basis.""You're rude and ignorant," Lloyd retorts. "Why don't you go jump in a lake? I won't miss you!"Seaford enters the room, interrupting the conversation."Finish helping Miss Heppner sweetheart. Mr. Bernfield, I'll thank you not to speak to my daughter like that. We've been having a great time up until now. Please behave or I'll have to ask you to leave. I think you should apologize to these two ladies. You don't want all this delicious food to go to waste do you? Besides, the games are set up in the dining room. I want to see how you do in Spades since you talked so much trash today out at the pool."Scheley stands erect, embarrassed. Seaford could have cursed him out and ended the evening on a bad note, but he didn't. He runs his left hand through his bushy, red hair. The man turns to Lloyd and Miss Heppner. "I'm sorry. I guess it's the beer wearing off. Please forgive me."Miss Heppner nods her head and turns her attention back to the food. Lloyd rolls her eyes at the man and ignores his failed attempt at an apology. "Creep!" Lloyd mumbles. She goes back to stirring the macaroni and cheese. How awesome would it be to find a roach and grind it into his food, she thinks as she watch the self-centered man walk away.
