Det viser sig, at ringen besidder magiske evner, og den, der har den i sin besiddelse, kan regere verden. Dét ved den onde troldmand, Saruman, der ikke viger tilbage for nogen eller noget i sin besættelse af at besidde RINGEN. En gruppe vise mænd beslutter, at det eneste håb er at destruere ringen, og Frodo og hans lille gruppe venner begiver sig ud på deres farlige færd.
