Of the many Miles Davis bands, none was more influential or popular than the quintet featuring John Coltrane (tenor sax), Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Philly Joe Jones (drums) heard on this 1961 recording. Davis' subdued ballads and medium-tempo standards endeared him to audiences. Fellow musicians caught him with searing renditions of classics like Salt Peanuts and Well, You Needn't.
